Te mapa
Yongning is a township in Ninglang County in northwest Yunnan, close to the border with Sichuan. It occupies a broad, high basin just north of Lugu Lake, surrounded by forested ridges. From above there is no dense town grid. Instead, villages and farm clusters are spread across the valley floor, linked by roads that follow the land to the lake and over the passes.
The area is home to the Mosuo, a small community known for a matrilineal family structure in which households are organised around the mother's line. The Zhamei Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist temple, stands in the basin, and the landscape of fields, streams and mountains has made the Yongning and Lugu Lake area a destination for travellers.
A Yongning map poster is closer to a landscape portrait than a city plan. Its lines are country roads, watercourses and the scattered outlines of villages, framed by empty space where the hills rise. In black and white, the design is spare and open, with the southward road toward the lake giving the composition its direction.
Yongning sits in a flat, high valley surrounded by ridges. On the poster the settled valley floor is clearly set off from the steep, empty ground around it.
Roads run south from the basin toward Lugu Lake, one of the best-known lakes in the region. The route gives the design a clear line from village to water.
Rather than a single centre, settlements are spread across the valley as small clusters of buildings and lanes. Together they create a loose, rural texture that is very different from a city.
