Youhao sits in the far north of Heilongjiang, within the city of Yichun, where settlement follows the valleys through a heavily forested mountain landscape. From above, the built area looks like a thin band. Streets run parallel to the valley floor, cross streets are short, and the empty space around them stands for slopes covered in trees rather than open farmland.
The Yichun area grew around the timber industry, and the pattern shows it. Rail lines and main roads keep to the lowest ground, and neighbourhoods cluster where the valley widens.
