Te mapa
Zaranj is the capital of Nimroz province, in Afghanistan's far southwest, right on the border with Iran. The city sits in the Sistan basin, where the Helmand River ends in a system of channels, marshes and seasonal lakes. From above, the green of the irrigated land looks sharply cut out against the surrounding desert, and the city's streets spread across a flat, almost featureless plain.
The border is the main reason Zaranj matters. A highway built with Indian assistance links the city to Delaram and the main Afghan road network, making Zaranj an important trade crossing toward Iran. On the map, that road leaves the city in long, straight stretches heading east, while the border crossing marks its western edge.
A Zaranj map poster shows a city defined by water and by the lack of it. The street grid fills the settled area, irrigation ditches fan out to the fields, and beyond them the lines simply stop. In black and white that sudden boundary becomes the heart of the composition: a dense, lived-in patch surrounded by a great deal of empty space.
The river's final branches and irrigation canals spread out around the city, drawing thin, branching lines across the otherwise empty basin.
Zaranj faces Iran directly across the frontier, so one side of the map is framed by a political line rather than by any natural feature.
The road to Delaram runs away from the city in long, straight sections, the main line connecting this corner of Afghanistan to the rest of the country.

Koteā ko Zaranj
For people from Nimroz, or anyone who has crossed this border, the map captures a very particular place: a small grid of streets held between farmland and desert. It is a spare design that looks good in any room.
