Te mapa
Zhongwei lies in western Ningxia, where the Yellow River flows out of the mountains onto a strip of irrigated plain. On the map, the city is a small, orderly grid on the northern bank of the river. Green irrigated fields surround it, and to the north the landscape changes sharply to the dunes of the Tengger Desert.
The Yellow River is the main feature of a Zhongwei map poster. It is broad and slow here and is fed by irrigation canals that have been used in this region for more than two thousand years. The fields next to the river form narrow parallel strips, and the city blocks run in the same direction.
West of the city, the Shapotou area is where the desert meets the river. The railway there has been protected since the 1950s by checkerboard grids of straw planted in the sand to stop the dunes from moving. This well-known sand-control method is still used today. More recently, Zhongwei has become a site for large data centres, drawn by its dry, cool climate.
The river runs along the south of the city. Canals branch from it to water the narrow band of farmland between the city and the desert.
To the north the street network stops at the sand. The boundary between irrigated land and dunes is one of the most striking lines on the map.
West of the city, the desert meets the river at Shapotou. The railway there is protected by straw checkerboards planted across the dunes.
