Xigang lies in Ningxia on the broad plain around Yinchuan, the regional capital. This is irrigated country, watered for centuries by channels drawn from the Yellow River, which runs further to the east. On a map, the built-up area is a regular grid of wide roads and large blocks, typical of recent urban growth in northern China.
