Te mapa
Wuda is one of the districts of Wuhai, a coal city in the west of Inner Mongolia. It lies on the western bank of the Yellow River, facing the rest of Wuhai across the water. On a map the urban area forms a strip of regular blocks between the river and the dry, bare hills rising to the west.
The streets follow a practical grid, typical of Chinese industrial towns planned in the second half of the twentieth century, with broad main roads and large residential compounds. Beyond them the map opens onto mine sites, rail lines and empty ground. A Wuda map poster shows a sharp boundary between the settled area and the arid landscape.
A dam downstream has widened the Yellow River here into a broad reservoir known as Wuhai Lake, giving the eastern edge of the district a large, smooth expanse of water. The area is also known for its long-burning underground coal fires, which scientists have studied for years as an example of an environmental problem that is hard to contain.
The river, widened here into Wuhai Lake, forms the eastern edge of the district, a broad band of open water that dominates the composition.
Wide, straight roads and rectangular blocks make up the town centre, reflecting its growth as a planned settlement serving the surrounding coal mines.
West of the town, bare hills and mining areas take over from streets, leaving sparse lines of haul roads and railways across largely empty ground.

Koteā ko Wuda
Wuda was shaped by hard work in an unforgiving landscape, and for families linked to its mines it carries strong memories. The map shows that setting plainly: river, town and desert in three clear bands.
