Žilina sits in a basin in northwestern Slovakia where the Kysuca and the Rajčanka flow into the Váh, and the map is shaped by that meeting of waters. The rivers and their broad floodplains curve around the city, and the built-up area spreads between them, with bridges and embankments marking the crossings. On every side the basin is framed by mountains.
At the heart of the old town is a square lined with arcaded houses, a regular medieval layout that shows clearly on a map as a small, crisp rectangle surrounded by a grid of short streets. Around it the city grew outward in rings of later districts, housing estates and industrial areas along the rail lines.
