Khvāf is a town in Razavi Khorasan province in eastern Iran, not far from the border with Afghanistan. The map shows a compact urban area of streets and blocks surrounded by dry, open country, with roads leading out across the plain toward neighbouring towns and villages.
The county is known for the ancient windmills of Nashtifan, which are built of clay and wood and use the strong seasonal winds of the region to grind grain. Khvāf is also on the railway line connecting Iran with Herat in Afghanistan, a long straight line across the open land.
