Pushkar Map Poster
Pushkar lies in Rajasthan, west of Ajmer, in a valley enclosed by the Aravalli hills. From above, the town forms a ring around Pushkar Lake. Dense lanes, temples and houses crowd the shore, and dozens of ghats, the stepped bathing platforms, lead down to the water. Beyond the town, the desert and the hills open up.
Pushkar is one of the holiest sites in Hinduism, and it has one of the very few temples dedicated to Brahma. Temples to Savitri and Gayatri stand on hilltops overlooking the town. Every autumn the Pushkar Fair brings camel traders, pilgrims and visitors to the open ground on the town's edge, one of the largest livestock fairs in India.
