The map
Abomey-Calavi lies immediately north of Cotonou in southern Benin, and much of it has grown as part of the same metropolitan area. The map shows long roads running north from the coast, with a wide, loosely organised network of streets filling the land between them. To the east lies Lake Nokoué, a large, shallow lagoon whose shoreline gives the city its most striking edge.
On the lake stands Ganvié, a village built on stilts over the water, reached by boat and often visited from the landing at Calavi. On a poster it appears as a delicate cluster of shapes floating on open water, far from the solid street network ashore. Inland, newer neighbourhoods spread across former farmland, and the pattern loosens as it moves away from Cotonou.
The city is home to the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin's largest university, whose campus occupies a large, clearly defined area on the map. Despite the shared name, Abomey-Calavi is separate from the historic royal town of Abomey further north. An Abomey-Calavi map poster shows a city defined by lake, campus and steady growth outward from the coast.

Houses built on stilts over the lake form a cluster of small shapes on the water, one of the most unusual features of any city map.
The campus of the University of Abomey-Calavi forms a large, well-defined area of buildings and paths within the surrounding street network.
