The map
Abū Qīr lies at the eastern end of Alexandria, on a headland that pushes into the Mediterranean. The map is organised around its shoreline. On one side is the open sea, and on the other the wide, gentle curve of Abu Qir Bay sweeps east toward the Nile delta. The town's streets fill the land between the coast and the rail line to Alexandria.
The bay is famous in history. In 1798 the British fleet under Horatio Nelson destroyed the French fleet at anchor here, in what became known as the Battle of the Nile. Beneath the water lie the submerged remains of the ancient cities of Canopus and Heracleion, which underwater archaeologists began mapping in recent decades.
An Abū Qīr map poster shows a place defined by its edges. The coastline wraps around the town in a single line, fishing harbours and small jetties mark the shore, and the streets stop where the water begins. In black and white the bay becomes a large, calm field beside a tightly built town.
The shallow bay curves broadly eastward from the headland, a smooth arc of coast that gives the whole map its sense of direction and scale.
The town's streets crowd onto the point of land between sea and bay, so the built area becomes a compact, irregular shape outlined by water.
Offshore, the remains of Canopus and Heracleion lie underwater. They are invisible on the map, but they give the empty blue of the bay an unusual depth of history.

Why Abū Qīr
Abū Qīr means something to Alexandrians, to people who have eaten fish by the harbour, and to anyone drawn to the history of the Battle of the Nile. The poster keeps that coastline in a simple, lasting form.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, in English or another script, and there are five styles to choose from. Printed posters on matte paper ship from print partners in over 30 countries, with an optional wooden frame.
