The map
Abū Qurqāş is a town in Minya Governorate in Middle Egypt, on the west side of the Nile. From above, the map shows the Nile Valley in its most basic form: a narrow green strip of farmland, laced with irrigation canals, between the river and the desert. The town is a dense, compact cluster of streets set within that farmland.
The Ibrahimiya Canal, one of the main irrigation arteries of Middle Egypt, runs along this stretch of the valley, and smaller channels branch off it across the fields. Roads and a railway follow the valley north and south. On the east bank of the Nile, the desert cliffs come close to the river.
In those eastern cliffs lie the rock-cut tombs of Beni Hasan, decorated burial chambers of Middle Kingdom officials and one of the best-known ancient sites in the region. An Abū Qurqāş map poster shows the town, the canals, the river and the edge of the desert, the whole ordered pattern of life in the valley.
The river runs along the east side of the town. It is the broadest line on the map and the reason for everything around it.
The Ibrahimiya Canal and its branches cross the farmland in long lines. On the poster they make a fine web that divides the fields.
The green valley ends sharply at the desert. That boundary is clearest on the east bank near Beni Hasan, where cliffs meet the river.
