The map
Acreúna is a town in the southwest of Goiás, in central Brazil, in the heart of one of the country's major farming regions. From above, the town is a neat, compact grid of streets on open, gently rolling land. Around it, the landscape is dominated by very large fields, planted mostly with soybeans, corn and other crops typical of the cerrado.
The regular street grid of the town is typical of settlements founded in the twentieth century in Brazil's interior. On an Acreúna map poster, that grid contrasts with the wide, geometric fields surrounding it, and with the circles of centre-pivot irrigation that appear across the region like drawn discs.
Remaining strips of native vegetation follow the streams and gullies, winding between the fields in darker, irregular lines. Highways run straight across the plateau, linking the town to larger centres in the state. In black and white, the map becomes a study of order: a small grid within a larger pattern of rectangles and circles.

Centre-pivot irrigation creates large circular fields across the surrounding farmland. They give the map a distinctive pattern seen in much of central Brazil.
Narrow strips of vegetation follow streams between the fields. Their winding lines soften the geometry of the plain and add depth to the composition.
