They wind along the contours of the slopes, loop around ridges and drop into valleys. The town centre gathers on lower ground, and roads climb westwards to a hilltop where the castle stands.
Ajloun Castle, also known as Qal'at ar-Rabad, was built in the late twelfth century by a commander of Saladin. It watched over the Jordan Valley and the routes to the north. Oak and pine forests surround the town, and the Ajloun Forest Reserve protects part of this woodland. The hills are unusually green for Jordan.
