The map
Akola lies in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, on the flat Deccan plain, and its map is organised around a small river. The Morna flows through the city, dividing the older town on one bank from the newer city on the other, and a handful of bridges connect the two. Around them the land is open and agricultural, part of one of the main cotton-growing belts of India.
The city grew as a trading centre for cotton, and it remains an important market for the surrounding district. It is also a railway junction on the main line between Mumbai and Kolkata, with the tracks running across the city in long straight lines that frame the dense commercial areas near the station.
On the edge of the city is the campus of Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, a large agricultural university whose fields, research plots and buildings create a broad open area on the map. An Akola map poster shows a practical, working city in clear lines: the river, the railway, the markets and the wide farmland that surrounds them.

The main line across central India passes through Akola, and its straight tracks and the station area form one of the strongest structural elements on the map.
