Houses face the street, and gardens and orchards stretch behind them. From above this creates a repeated rhythm of narrow strips along each road.

The map
Aksu sits in Kazakhstan's Turkistan region, in foothill country east of Shymkent, where the plains start rising toward the western Tian Shan. The name means white water in Kazakh, a common name for rivers fed by snowmelt in this part of Central Asia. The map is shaped by water and farming, not by a dense urban core.
Streets run in long, fairly straight lines. Houses sit on deep plots with gardens and orchards behind them, a layout typical of southern Kazakh villages. Irrigation channels and field boundaries continue the linear pattern past the edge of the settlement, and roads lead out toward Shymkent and the surrounding villages.
An Aksu map poster shows a place where the planning is agricultural. The plots are long and narrow, the roads are straight, and water sets the direction of both. In black and white the result is calm and regular, with the density fading gradually as the settlement gives way to fields.
Houses face the street, and gardens and orchards stretch behind them. From above this creates a repeated rhythm of narrow strips along each road.
The settlement sits where the plain meets the first slopes of the western Tian Shan. Roads and fields follow the gentle fall of the land toward the lowlands.
A main road links Aksu with the regional city to the west. On the poster it is one of the strongest lines and anchors the smaller village streets.

Why Aksu
People from southern Kazakhstan often feel strongly attached to their home villages, even after moving to Shymkent, Almaty or abroad. A map of Aksu brings back the familiar streets and gardens and the view toward the mountains.
The title, subtitle and coordinates can be set in any wording you like, for example with a family name or an important date. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Order a digital file or a framed print.
