About this Akureyri map poster
Akureyri lies near the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, and the map is shaped by that long body of water. The town runs along the western shore, its streets climbing a steep hillside in terraces. To the south, the delta of the Eyjafjarðará river spreads into flat land where the airport's runway sits almost in the fjord itself.
Often called the capital of the north, Akureyri is the largest town outside Iceland's capital region. Its church, Akureyrarkirkja, stands above the centre at the top of a long flight of steps, and the botanical garden, Lystigarðurinn, is one of the world's most northerly. Mountains rise behind the town, including the Hlíðarfjall ski area.
