The map
Al Badārī lies in Asyut Governorate in Upper Egypt, on the eastern bank of the Nile. From above, the setting is unmistakable: a narrow belt of cultivated land along the river, with the town set within it and the desert beginning abruptly where irrigation ends. Canals and field boundaries fill the green strip with fine lines.
The town gave its name to the Badarian culture, one of the earliest known predynastic cultures of Egypt, identified through archaeological finds in the area in the early twentieth century. The desert edge near the town holds the sites where that work took place, a reminder of how long people have lived along this stretch of the valley.
An Al Badārī map poster captures the essential geography of the Nile valley in a single frame. The river runs as a broad band, the fields form a detailed strip, and the desert leaves wide empty space. In monochrome that sequence of water, cultivation and sand becomes a strong, quiet composition.
The river runs past the town's western side as a wide, steady band, the source of the cultivated land and the dominant line across the map.
A narrow belt of fields, canals and villages lines the east bank, drawn in fine detail and ending sharply where irrigation gives way to desert.
Beyond the fields the desert begins, the setting of the archaeological sites that gave the Badarian culture its name and a large open space on the map.
