About this Al Khārjah map poster
Al Khārjah, often written Kharga, is the capital of the New Valley Governorate and the main town of the Kharga Oasis in Egypt's Western Desert. It sits in a long depression below the surrounding plateau. On a map the town appears as a clearly bounded settlement of wide streets, surrounded by farm plots and palm groves, with open desert on every side.
Much of the layout dates from the town's twentieth-century growth as an administrative centre, which shows in its broad, straight roads and regular blocks. Older quarters and farmland sit closer to the wells and springs that have supported the oasis for thousands of years. Roads link Kharga with the Nile Valley and with Dakhla Oasis to the west.
Just north of the town stand the Temple of Hibis, whose decoration dates largely to the Persian period, and the Bagawat necropolis, one of the oldest surviving Christian cemeteries in the world.
