The map
Al Minshāh lies on the west bank of the Nile in Sohag Governorate, in Upper Egypt. Its map is defined by the river on one side and by the narrow strip of irrigated land that follows it. The town forms a dense cluster of streets near the water, with canals and farm roads running parallel to the Nile before the land gives way to desert.
The town stands on the site of Ptolemais Hermiou, a Greek city founded under Ptolemy I that served as an important administrative centre in Upper Egypt during the Ptolemaic period. Little of the ancient city is visible today, but its location reflects the same logic that shapes the town now: the river, the fields and the route along the valley.
An Al Minshāh map poster shows the town between the broad line of the Nile and the careful geometry of fields and canals. It is a meaningful piece for people from Sohag and for anyone interested in the long history of settlement along the Nile valley.
The river runs along the edge of the town as a wide, calm band, the dominant feature of the map and the reason the settlement exists.
Irrigation canals and farm roads run parallel to the Nile, dividing the green strip into long, narrow plots that give the poster a steady rhythm.
Close to the river, the town's streets form a compact, irregular cluster where the densest line work on the map is found.
