The map
Al Wāsiţah lies in the Nile valley south of Cairo, near the point where the route west toward the Faiyum depression leaves the river corridor. From above, the town forms a dense cluster of streets on the west side of the Nile. It is surrounded by a narrow band of cultivated fields crossed by irrigation canals, and beyond them the land turns abruptly into desert.
The railway and the main road along the Nile valley pass through or beside the town, drawing long, straight lines from north to south. The pyramid of Meidum, one of the earliest attempts at a true pyramid, stands on the desert edge in the wider area, a reminder of how long people have lived along this stretch of the river.
An Al Wāsiţah map poster captures the classic Egyptian contrast between water and dry land. The Nile, the canals and the finely divided fields fill part of the frame with detail, while the desert beyond is almost empty. The town sits in between, as a dense, compact knot of streets.
The river flows north past the town, with a band of fields on either side. It forms the wide, gentle curve that defines the composition.
Canals and smaller channels branch across the farmland and divide it into narrow parcels. They add a fine linear texture to the valley floor.
West of the cultivated land, the fields end sharply at the desert. The contrast leaves a broad, quiet, almost blank area on the map.
