About this Almelo map poster
Almelo lies in Twente, the eastern part of the Dutch province of Overijssel. On the map, it is shaped by water. Several canals meet here, including a branch of the Twentekanaal and the canal toward Nordhorn across the German border. They cut straight lines through the town and its industrial areas.
The old town is compact, with a small market area and streets leading outward. Right next to it, the grounds of Huis Almelo, the estate of the town's former lords, keep a large area of woods and lanes free of building. Around them spread residential districts from different decades, each with its own street pattern, and finally the farmland of Twente.
Almelo grew as a centre of the Twente textile industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Traces of the mills and their canals can still be seen in the town layout. An Almelo map poster shows a Dutch town where water, industry and an old estate still shape the plan.
