The coast

About this Amalfi Coast map poster

The Amalfi Coast runs along the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula, facing the Gulf of Salerno. On a map it is a sharp line between sea and mountain. The Lattari range drops almost straight into the water, leaving room only for a road and for towns squeezed into the mouths of narrow valleys. The Amalfi Drive, the SS163, follows every fold of the cliff.

Amalfi itself was the seat of a medieval maritime republic that traded across the Mediterranean, and the long stairway up to its cathedral still dominates the town. Positano climbs its slope in a steep pyramid of houses, while Ravello sits on a ridge high above the coast. The whole stretch was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as a cultural landscape.

An Amalfi Coast map poster shows how little flat ground there is. Streets turn into switchbacks and stepped paths, and the road bends into each inlet before rounding the next headland. Stairways climb between the hairpins, and the towns appear as small, dense knots spaced out along a coastline that twists for kilometre after kilometre.

01

The Amalfi Drive

The SS163 winds along the cliffs toward Vietri sul Mare, a continuous ribbon of hairpin bends that becomes the main line of the whole composition.

02

Positano's slope

Houses and lanes are stacked up a steep amphitheatre above the beach, so the street pattern looks compressed and layered rather than laid out in any kind of grid.

03

Ravello above

Ravello's small cluster of streets sits on a ridge high over the sea, apart from the shoreline and linked to the coast road by a climbing, winding route.

Why Amalfi Coast

A map that means something

This is a map for people who drove the coast road once and still remember each bend, or who married in one of its towns. A title with a couple's names, a subtitle with the wedding date and custom coordinates turn the coastline into a personal record.

The dramatic outline works in every style, from Classic black & white and Noir to the warmer Paper and Sand or the technical Blueprint. Download the HD files for $9, or order a printed matte poster, with a wooden frame if you prefer.
