The map

About this Ambalangoda map poster

Ambalangoda lies on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, between Colombo and Galle. Its map is shaped by the coast: the town stretches in a narrow band along the shoreline, with the main coastal road and the southern railway running parallel to the sea. Streets reach from these lines towards the beach on one side and inland on the other.

The town is best known for its traditional carved wooden masks, used in ritual performances and folk dance, and mask workshops and a mask museum are part of its identity. Fishing also shapes local life, and the shoreline includes a small harbour where boats come in along the coast.

Inland, the density drops quickly, giving way to palm groves, paddy fields and a lagoon area, so the settled strip is clearly defined. An Ambalangoda map poster highlights this long, linear form, with the coastline, road and rail running side by side, and the short streets between them rendered as fine, even strokes.

01

Coastal strip

The town stretches along the sea in a narrow band, so the map is long and slender, with the coastline forming one clean edge.

02

Parallel road and rail

The coastal road and the southern railway run side by side through town, drawing two strong lines that parallel the shore.

03

Inland greenery

Behind the built-up strip, palm groves, fields and water open up, creating a quiet background that sharpens the town's outline.
