The map
Ambalantota lies on the southern coast of Sri Lanka in the Hambantota District, close to where the Walawe Ganga meets the Indian Ocean. The town's streets gather near the river and the coastal road, while the land inland opens into a flat plain of rice paddies and irrigation channels. From above, water sets the pattern: the river, the shoreline and the fields all shape the settlement.
The Walawe is one of the major rivers of the south, and its lower course near Ambalantota broadens before reaching the sea. The coastline here is long and gently curved, with lagoons and scrubland along it. Inland, irrigated farmland is organised in rectangular plots, adding a fine geometric texture to the map and a clear contrast with the river's loose curves.
The town has grown in recent years as the Hambantota area developed its port and new infrastructure, and roads now link it more firmly to the rest of the south. Still, its map keeps a rural, water-led character. An Ambalantota map poster captures the meeting of river, farmland and coast in a spare, graphic form.
The river curves past the town and widens as it approaches the ocean, forming the strongest natural line on the map and a clear divide in the landscape.
Irrigated farmland spreads inland in neat, rectangular plots, bordered by channels and small roads that give the plain a finely ruled texture.
A long, gently curved shoreline runs along the south, with beaches and lagoons marking the edge between the land and the Indian Ocean.
