The map

About this Ambatolampy map poster

Ambatolampy lies in the central highlands of Madagascar, on Route Nationale 7 south of Antananarivo, the main road linking the capital to Antsirabe and the south. The town stretches along this route, and on the map the highway forms a spine from which smaller streets branch into the surrounding neighbourhoods. The terrain is hilly, so the street pattern bends and adapts rather than forming a grid.

The town is widely known for its aluminium workshops, where pots and cooking utensils are cast from recycled metal and sold along the roadside and across the country. Travellers on the RN7 often stop here to watch the casting, and the workshops are an essential part of what gives Ambatolampy its identity within Madagascar's highlands.

Around the town the landscape is agricultural, with rice paddies filling the valley floors and pine and eucalyptus plantations on the higher ground. An Ambatolampy map poster presents this setting in fine lines: the highway running through, the tight town centre and the patterns of paddies and hills extending in every direction.

01

RN7 spine

The national road runs straight through the town, forming the central line of the map and linking Ambatolampy to Antananarivo and Antsirabe.

02

Rice valleys

Paddies fill the low ground between the hills, appearing as fine networks of field boundaries and irrigation channels around the town.

03

Hilly streets

The town's side streets climb and curve with the terrain, creating an irregular pattern that sets it apart from planned grid towns.
