The map

About this Ambatondrazaka map poster

Ambatondrazaka is the capital of the Alaotra-Mangoro region in eastern Madagascar. It sits on the plain near the southern end of Lake Alaotra, the largest lake in the country. The basin around the lake is Madagascar's most important rice-growing area, and the town is the trading centre for the farming communities across it.

The lake is ringed by wide reed marshes, home to the Alaotra gentle lemur, a species found nowhere else. From above, the landscape is dominated by the geometry of irrigated rice fields, with channels and embankments dividing the plain into countless small plots. Low hills rise gently at the edge of the basin.

An Ambatondrazaka map poster shows the town as a compact cluster of streets set back from the marshes, with roads leaving in several directions across the plain. Beyond it, fields and water channels form a fine, repeating texture. With a wider frame, the marshes and open water of the lake add one large, calm shape.

01

Lake Alaotra

Madagascar's largest lake lies north of the town, surrounded by reed beds and marshland. On the map these appear as broad, soft-edged areas.

02

Rice plain

Irrigated paddies cover the valley floor. Their channels and embankments form a precise, almost woven pattern around the town and along the roads.

03

Basin hills

Low hills ring the basin. Their gentle slopes make a natural frame for the flat farmland and the town at its centre.
