The map
‘Anah lies on the Euphrates in western Iraq, in Anbar province. For centuries, the town stretched along a narrow belt of palm groves beside the river. The design followed the water: one long settlement, only a few streets deep, backed by dry upland. The old riverside layout still shapes how people picture ‘Anah.
In the 1980s, the reservoir behind the Haditha Dam flooded the old town, and ‘Anah was rebuilt on higher ground. The modern map shows a planned street pattern above a widened body of water. The shoreline now looks more like a lake than a river, and islands and inlets mark where the valley used to be.
An ‘Anah map poster shows this layered history through its outline. It captures the long shoreline, the rebuilt town set back from it and the dry plateau on either side. In a single black-and-white plan, you can see both a place with a very long past and the way its geography changed in recent decades.

The newer town was laid out on higher ground above the water. Its more regular streets contrast with the curving riverbank below.
Beyond the river valley, open dry land spreads away on both sides. It frames the town and the water with a wide, calm margin.
