The map

About this Anbyŏn-ŭp map poster

Anbyŏn-ŭp is the seat of Anbyŏn County in Kangwŏn Province, North Korea, a short distance south of the port city of Wonsan. It sits on a stretch of flat, farmed plain near the east coast, with the mountains of the Taebaek range rising to the west and south.

From above, the town is compact and regular, with a planned street layout and main roads leading toward Wonsan and the coast. The surrounding plain is divided into rice fields, crossed by rivers and irrigation channels that flow toward the Sea of Japan (the East Sea). The historic Sokwang Temple once stood in the county's mountains.

An Anbyŏn-ŭp map poster shows a place few people outside Korea have seen: a small town between mountains and sea, set in an orderly agricultural landscape. For families with roots in the region, which many left during the Korean War, the map carries a meaning that goes far beyond geography.

01

Town centre

The county seat forms a compact, regularly laid out cluster of streets. It anchors the composition at the heart of the plain.

02

Rice plain

Around the town, flat fields are divided by channels and small roads. They create a fine, even pattern across the lower part of the map.

03

Mountain edge

The mountains rise west and south of the plain. Their slopes give the edges of the poster a darker, more irregular texture.

Why Anbyŏn-ŭp

A map that means something

Many Korean families have ancestral roots in Kangwŏn that they have never been able to visit. A map of Anbyŏn-ŭp is a quiet, meaningful way to honour those origins and pass them on to the next generation.

Write the title in Hangul or English, add a family name or date, and keep or edit the coordinates. Choose one of five styles, preview it free, then download the files for $9 or order a matte print.
