About this Andkhoy map poster
Andkhoy lies in Faryab province in northern Afghanistan, on the plain that slopes gently towards the Amu Darya and the border with Turkmenistan. Its surroundings are flat, open and dry, with farmland sustained by irrigation. From above the town appears as a mix of streets and walled compounds around a central bazaar, with roads leaving in long, straight lines across the plain.
The town has long been a stop on trade routes linking northern Afghanistan with Central Asia, and today it lies on the road towards the Aqina border crossing. It is known for the region's Turkmen carpets and, historically, for karakul lambskins, both traded through its markets. Much of its population is Turkmen and Uzbek, reflecting the cultural geography of the north.
