The map

About this Apan map poster

Apan sits in the southeast of Hidalgo, on the broad high plain known as the Llanos de Apan, northeast of Mexico City. The town is laid out in a regular grid around its central plaza and church, a pattern inherited from colonial planning. Its streets run outward in straight lines until they meet the farmland around it.

For centuries this region was the heartland of pulque, the fermented drink made from agave sap, and large haciendas across the plain supplied Mexico City. Maguey plants still grow along many field edges. On the map the countryside around Apan is marked by long straight tracks, hacienda compounds and the geometry of cultivated land.

An Apan map poster suits people from Hidalgo and families with roots on the Llanos, as well as anyone drawn to the history of pulque and the haciendas. The clear colonial grid against the open plain gives the poster a calm, orderly look that fits well beside photographs or other maps.

01

Colonial grid

Straight streets meeting at right angles form the core of the town around the main plaza, a pattern that reads crisply in black and white.

02

Llanos de Apan

The high, open plain around the town is crossed by farm roads and field lines, giving the map a sense of space around the compact centre.

03

Hacienda landscape

Former pulque estates are scattered across the region. Their compounds and access roads appear as isolated clusters within the pattern of fields.
