About this Arang map poster
Arang sits on the flat plain of central Chhattisgarh, a short way east of Raipur, where the broad Mahanadi river curves past the town. From above, the river is the clearest line on the sheet: a wide, braided channel with sandbanks, and the town's lanes gathered close to its southern bank.
The town is known for its old temples. The best known is the Bhand Deval, a Jain temple usually dated to around the eleventh century. On a map, the older core shows as a close cluster of short, irregular lanes. The newer roads beyond it run straighter and further apart, before giving way to the pattern of fields and small tanks that covers this part of the plain.
