The map
Arele lies in the oasis country of southwestern Xinjiang, on the western rim of the Tarim Basin. Life here depends on water from rivers fed by the surrounding mountains. From above, the map reflects that. The settlement sits within a green, irrigated zone of fields, poplar-lined roads and canals, with arid land beyond.
The street pattern combines village lanes with more regular, planned roads. Houses and courtyards line the lanes, and the fields around them are divided by irrigation channels into narrow plots. The layout follows water, and roads often run beside canals, which gives the map a strong network of parallel and branching lines.
An Arele map poster shows how an oasis community organises its land. Every road and plot relates to the irrigation that makes farming possible at the edge of the desert. The composition is fine and detailed, a close-grained pattern of lanes and fields that suits the Paper and Sand styles especially.
Channels bring water through the oasis and divide the fields into narrow plots. On the poster they form a dense web of fine lines around the settlement.
Roads in the oasis often follow canals and field edges. They create long, straight lines that tie the village to neighbouring settlements.
Beyond the irrigated zone the land becomes arid and empty. This gives the map a clear boundary between cultivated detail and open space.
