The map
As Sanţah lies in Gharbia governorate, in the middle of the Nile Delta, not far from the provincial capital of Tanta. The land here is completely flat and intensively farmed, and from above the town appears as a dense knot of streets surrounded by a fine mesh of fields, canals and small villages.
Water organises the Delta. Irrigation canals branch across the countryside in long lines, and roads often run beside them on raised banks. Inside the town, the older quarters are tightly packed with narrow lanes, while newer streets at the edges are straighter and more open. The result is a clear contrast between an organic centre and a planned fringe.
An As Sanţah map poster shows the Delta at the scale of everyday life. There are no grand monuments here, only the patterns people have made over generations on fertile ground, and in black and white those patterns become surprisingly beautiful: dense, rhythmic and full of fine detail that reveals more the closer you stand.
The centre is packed with narrow, irregular lanes that create the darkest and most intricate part of the map, typical of long-settled Delta towns.
Irrigation canals run through the surrounding farmland in long, gently curving lines, often paired with roads along their banks.
Small villages dot the countryside around the town, appearing as compact clusters of streets scattered across the flat, open land of the Delta.

Why As Sanţah
