The map
Āsbe Teferī, also known as Chiro, lies in eastern Ethiopia in the Oromia region, on the main road between Addis Ababa and Harar. It is the administrative centre of the West Hararghe Zone. On a map, the highway forms the backbone of the town. Streets branch off it into residential areas that climb and spread across uneven highland terrain in the Chercher Mountains.
The town sits at high altitude in a farming region known for coffee and khat, crops that supply the markets along the road east. The surrounding landscape is hilly and cultivated, with small fields and footpaths covering the slopes between settlements. Both of the town's names are still in use, so it can appear under either one on different maps and signs.
An Āsbe Teferī map poster captures a highland road town in its essential form: one strong line, a web of side streets and open hills around it. It is a meaningful map for people from West Hararghe living elsewhere in Ethiopia or abroad. It also suits anyone who has travelled the long road east toward Harar.
The road between Addis Ababa and Harar runs through the town. It forms the main axis and the densest band of buildings and streets on the map.
Away from the highway, streets follow the slopes, bending and branching in irregular patterns that reflect the highland setting more than any formal plan.
Around the town, the map opens onto farmed slopes crossed by tracks and footpaths. The settlement stands out as a clear shape within wide open space.
