The map

About this Asenovgrad map poster

Asenovgrad lies just south-east of Plovdiv, exactly where the Rhodope Mountains meet the Upper Thracian Plain. The Chepelarska River, also called the Asenitsa, leaves a narrow gorge here and flows north across the flatlands. From above, the town fans out from the mouth of that valley. Steep slopes rise to the south, and open farmland stretches to the north.

Above the gorge stands Asen's Fortress, a medieval stronghold associated with Tsar Ivan Asen II, after whom the town was renamed. Further up the valley is Bachkovo Monastery, one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Bulgaria. The town is also known for its many churches and chapels, and for Mavrud wine produced in the surrounding vineyards.

An Asenovgrad map poster captures a sharp geographic boundary. Dense streets fill the lowland, the river threads through them, and the road into the mountains follows the narrow valley south. Few towns show so clearly the point where a plain ends and the mountains begin.

01

River gorge

The Chepelarska River emerges from the Rhodopes through a narrow valley. On the map, the road and the river squeeze together here before the town opens out.

02

Mountain edge

To the south, the built-up area stops abruptly against the steep Rhodope slopes. The contrast between dense streets and empty hillside defines the composition.

03

Plain to the north

North of the town, the Thracian plain spreads out in fields and vineyards toward Plovdiv. Straight roads cross it, giving the poster an open, calm side.
