The map

About this Baiyang map poster

Baiyang is a town in the northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the steep, folded country along the Yangtze. No land here is truly flat. From above, streets do not form a grid. They follow the contours, stepping along hillsides and squeezing into the narrow level ground the terrain leaves.

Seen on a map, this makes Baiyang look organic: roads curve, split and meet at odd angles, and the built-up area stretches along the valley lines instead of spreading out evenly. Rural roads wind away into the hills, doubling back on themselves as they climb. Even without shading, the pattern of the lines tells you how steep the land is.

A Baiyang map poster turns that terrain into a drawing of hairpins and ribbons. It is a very different picture from the planned grids of China's plains. It shows the kind of place where daily routes are set by slopes and river bends, and in a monochrome style the town reads almost like a contour sketch.

01

Contour-led streets

Roads trace the hillsides instead of crossing them, so the street network curves and forks in a way that suggests the slopes underneath.

02

Valley-shaped town

The built-up area stretches along the available level ground, giving the town an elongated, irregular outline, very unlike a compact square centre.

03

Winding hill roads

Beyond the town, rural roads wind through the surrounding hills in loops and switchbacks, filling the edges of the map with fine, looping lines.

Why Baiyang

A map that means something

This poster is for anyone with roots in the hill country of northeastern Chongqing. It also suits people who like maps where the land's shape comes through in the street lines. It looks especially good on a plain wall, where the curves have space around them.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to edit, whether in Chinese pinyin, English or a family name. Choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. It is available as a digital download or a printed poster.
