About this Balad map poster
Balad lies in Salah ad Din Governorate, on the fertile plain near the Tigris River roughly between Baghdad and Samarra. From above, the town is a compact core of streets and courtyard houses set in an unusually green landscape for central Iraq, surrounded by orchards, date palms and fields fed by a network of irrigation canals drawn from the river.
The area has long been known for its fruit, and the map reflects that agricultural base: long, narrow plots running toward the water, small roads following the canals and villages scattered among the groves. Nearby lies a large airbase, known internationally from the years after 2003, whose runways appear as long straight strokes on the plain.
