The map
Balasore, also called Baleshwar, lies in northern Odisha on the flat coastal plain near the Bay of Bengal. From above, the town spreads along the Budhabalanga River. It has a dense, irregular centre of markets and lanes, and around it newer neighbourhoods and green paddy fields reach towards the coast a short distance to the east.
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, European trading companies set up factories near Balasore, which gave the area an early place in colonial commerce. Nearby Chandipur is known for its unusual beach, where the sea withdraws several kilometres at low tide, and for the Integrated Test Range that India uses for missile testing.
A Balasore map poster shows the meandering river setting against the tight street pattern of the old town. Railway and highway corridors run north to south along the coastal plain, and the wider frame brings in the shift from town to fields to shoreline. It is a modest, grounded image of a place shaped by river and sea.
The river winds past the town on its way to the Bay of Bengal. Its loops give the map a flowing line that contrasts with the dense town streets.
The centre is a tight tangle of market streets and lanes. The finer, irregular grain clearly sets the older town apart from the newer districts.
East of the town, flat paddy land leads to the coast near Chandipur, where the tide recedes far out across the sand.
