The map

About this Bandundu Province map poster

From above, Bandundu is shaped by water. The town sits on the bank of the Kwango, a short way above the point where the Kwango meets the Kasai, and the Kwilu joins the Kwango close by. On a map the rivers are the largest forms by far. The broad channels, sandbars and flat banks take up more of the frame than the streets do.

The streets spread back from the waterfront in a loose pattern, denser near the river and thinning into scattered blocks and tracks further inland. Known in colonial times as Banningville, the town was the capital of the former Bandundu Province and is now the seat of Kwilu. For centuries the rivers have served as its roads, and the layout still shows that.

A Bandundu Province map poster reduces all of this to line and space. The pale river bands meet in a wide confluence, and a finer mesh of streets is set against them. The picture shows a town that grew where waterways cross. That makes it a quieter subject than most city maps, and in black and white its structure comes across clearly.

01

Meeting of rivers

The Kwango, the Kwilu and the Kasai come together near the town, and their broad channels give the map a strong frame of open water.

02

Riverfront streets

The most closely built part of town follows the bank. Streets run toward the water, which shows how the port and the river trade shaped the layout.

03

Open edges

Away from the river the street pattern loosens and fades into open land, so the dense core and the sparse outskirts contrast clearly.

Why Bandundu Province

A map that means something

This map suits people who know the town from living there, working on the rivers or visiting family. It also suits anyone drawn to places whose shape comes from water rather than planning. The confluence reads almost like an abstract drawing, but it still clearly shows a real place.

You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to add a name, a date or a note of your own. You can also pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Each style gives the rivers and streets a different weight on the wall.
