The map
Bang Racham lies in Sing Buri, one of the small provinces on the central plain north of Bangkok. The map shows a landscape shaped by water. There are rivers and canals, irrigated rice fields in regular plots, and settlements that follow the waterways rather than forming compact centres.
The pattern is linear and repetitive. Houses and temples sit in lines along the banks, roads run parallel to the canals, and short paths lead out into the fields. From above, the countryside reads as a series of thin threads laid across a broad, flat surface. It is a pattern found throughout the Chao Phraya basin, where people have lived with seasonal water for centuries.
The province is closely linked to the story of Bang Rachan, the eighteenth-century village that held out against Burmese armies and is remembered across Thailand. A Bang Racham map poster shows the kind of quiet, water-shaped country that grew up around that memory. It is spare, orderly and more about lines than blocks.
Straight and winding waterways cross the plain and divide it into large sections. They are the dominant lines of the map and shape where roads and houses go.
The paddies form a regular patchwork of plots divided by embankments and paths. From above it gives the poster a fine, even texture from edge to edge.
Houses and temple grounds follow the watercourses in narrow ribbons. On the map, the settlement looks like beads threaded along the canals.
