The map

About this Bangil map poster

Bangil lies in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, on the low, fertile plain along the Madura Strait south of Surabaya. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets surrounded by rice fields, fishponds toward the coast, and small villages strung along roads and irrigation channels. Inland, the land rises gradually toward the volcanic slopes of the Arjuno-Welirang massif.

The railway gives the town a clear structural line. Bangil is a junction where the line from Surabaya divides: one route heads east along the coast and another turns south toward Malang. On a Bangil map poster, these tracks cut across the street pattern at angles, dividing the town into distinct quarters.

Bangil is widely known for its Islamic boarding schools, which have earned it a reputation as a santri town, and for its embroidery workshops. The streets of the centre are dense and irregular, with the market, mosques and small squares packed close together. In black and white, the map shows a town defined by rail, road and water.

Coastal plain

Rice fields and fishponds fill the flat land between Bangil and the Madura Strait, making a patchwork of small rectangles at the outer edges of the map.

03

Dense town centre

The core is a compact tangle of short streets, lanes and market blocks, where mosques and pesantren stand close together within the fabric of the town.
