The map

About this Baoshan map poster

Baoshan is a district in the north of Shanghai, and its map is defined by water on two sides. To the east runs the lower Huangpu River, and to the north the broad estuary of the Yangtze opens toward the sea. At Wusongkou the two meet, and the district's shoreline turns from river to estuary in a single wide curve.

The riverside is industrial on a large scale. The Baosteel works occupies a vast stretch of the northern shore, its plots and rail sidings forming huge rectangular blocks. Nearby, a cruise terminal and port facilities reach into the estuary. Inland, the district becomes a dense pattern of residential compounds, canals and new towns, with parks and wetland restored along parts of the former waterfront.

Baoshan grew from the old port town of Wusong, historically the gateway to Shanghai from the Yangtze. Today it is one of the city's most populous districts, with more than two million residents. A Baoshan map poster shows this meeting point of river, estuary and city, where Shanghai begins to face the open water.

01

Wusongkou

The mouth of the Huangpu, where the river that runs through central Shanghai joins the Yangtze estuary, forming the district's most recognisable corner on the map.

02

Steelworks shoreline

The Baosteel plant covers a long section of the northern waterfront, its large regular plots and docks creating a striking geometric edge along the estuary.

03

Inland canals

Away from the river, small canals and creeks run between residential blocks, a reminder of the delta landscape that existed long before the modern district.

Why Baoshan

A map that means something

Baoshan is home to millions of Shanghai residents, and for many of them the district, not the Bund, is the Shanghai they actually know. A map of its waterfront and neighbourhoods is a personal way to mark a home, a workplace or a first address in the city.

Personalise the title and subtitle, for example with a street or a year, and keep the coordinates line or change it. Five styles are available, including Blueprint, which suits the district's industrial geometry. HD downloads are $9, and prints ship from partners in more than 30 countries.
