The map

About this Baravāt map poster

Baravāt lies in Kerman province in southeastern Iran, right next to the city of Bam. It sits at the edge of the Lut Desert region. On a map the town and its neighbour almost merge. The streets run between walled gardens and date palm groves, which appear as dense, irregular blocks among the roads.

As in many oases on the Iranian plateau, water has long come from qanats, which are underground channels that bring groundwater from the mountains. The gardens and settlements follow their paths. Baravāt, like Bam, was severely damaged in the earthquake of December 2003, and much of what appears on the map today has been rebuilt since then.

A Baravāt map poster shows a green island in a dry landscape. It includes the network of lanes between the groves, the main roads linking the town to Bam, and the empty desert beyond the edge of cultivation. The drawing is a portrait of how people have made a place to live where water is scarce and valuable.

01

Palm groves

Date palm gardens enclosed by walls fill much of the map. They create large, irregular blocks between the narrow lanes.

02

Twin with Bam

Baravāt borders the city of Bam so closely that the two settlements almost form one continuous area on the map.

03

Desert edge

Beyond the gardens, the map opens into bare desert land. The sharp boundary shows where irrigation ends and the arid plateau begins.

Why Baravāt

A map that means something

For families from Baravāt and Bam, the map shows streets, gardens and a landscape that has been rebuilt with great effort. It is a quiet way to honour a place, and its strong contrast between garden and desert works well on any wall.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand and Paper reflect the desert setting well.
