The map
Battaramulla South lies just east of Colombo, next to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the country's administrative capital. The street map here is not a grid. Lanes branch off a few main roads, bend around former paddy land and marsh, and end in short cul-de-sacs, forming a dense, tree-like pattern. Water is never far away, and the Diyawanna Oya and its wetlands shape the area's edges.
On an island in the Diyawanna Oya nearby stands the Parliament of Sri Lanka, designed by Geoffrey Bawa and opened in the early 1980s. Battaramulla has since become a centre for government offices, and its roads carry heavy traffic between the capital and the fast-growing suburbs further east.
A Battaramulla South map poster captures a very particular kind of suburban plan: irregular, organic and set against open water. The branching lanes turn into something close to a botanical drawing, and the lake gives the composition a calm space to rest on.
The lake and its connected waterways form a broad open shape next to the suburb. It is the largest calm area on the poster and anchors the composition.
Rather than blocks, the streets here split and split again into narrow lanes. The result looks like a leaf's veins, quite unlike a planned city grid.
Low-lying marsh and former paddy fields leave gaps in the street network. Those blank patches show where the land is still too wet to build on.
