The map
Baudhuinville is the colonial-era name of the town now known as Moba, on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. From above, the lake dominates everything: a vast body of water filling one side of the map, with the town arranged along the shore and roads leading up into the higher ground behind it.
Lake Tanganyika is among the longest and deepest freshwater lakes in the world, and here its shoreline is framed by hills rising from the water. The town's streets follow the shore and the slopes, forming a compact settlement between the lake and the uplands rather than a broad grid.
The town grew around a Catholic mission founded in the late nineteenth century and remains a port on the lake. A Baudhuinville map poster pairs a small town with one of the great lakes of Africa, a composition in which open water and a thin band of streets set a calm, wide-open tone.
The lake fills a large part of the map, an expanse of open water that makes the composition calm and spacious, with the shoreline as the defining line.
The streets of the town follow the lakeshore, forming a narrow, compact settlement between the water and the rising ground behind it.
Behind the town, hills rise away from the lake, and the few roads leading inland curve with the terrain as they climb.
