Behbahān lies in the east of Khuzestan Province, where the flat lowlands of south-western Iran meet the first folds of the Zagros Mountains. On a map the town appears as a solid block of streets on level ground, with ridges rising beyond it and farmland and orchards stretching across the plain around it.
The centre has an older core of tighter, irregular streets, while newer districts are arranged in broad rectangular blocks along wide avenues.
