About this Beigang map poster
Beigang sits in Yunlin County on the western plain of Taiwan, on the north bank of the Beigang River, which separates it from Chiayi County. The town is compact and its streets are tightly packed, set in a flat landscape of fields crossed by irrigation channels and straight rural roads.
The town is known for Chaotian Temple, dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu and one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the island. During festival season processions fill the old streets around it. Beigang's layout still centres on the temple, and the main streets lead toward it from the river and the surrounding roads.
