The map
Belyy Yar lies in the Khanty-Mansi region of western Siberia, near the city of Surgut. Its name refers to a white bank, a steep river bank of the kind common along the Ob and its channels. The settlement sits on higher ground above a wide floodplain, where the land drops away into a maze of side channels, oxbow lakes and wetlands.
The town grew with the oil and gas industry that shaped the whole region, and its streets are laid out in blocks of apartment buildings and houses on the dry ground. On the map, the regular built area contrasts sharply with the tangled watercourses of the floodplain and the scattered lakes in the forest beyond.
A Belyy Yar map poster shows that contrast between order and wilderness. Straight streets and rectangular blocks occupy one part of the frame, while the rest is filled with river channels and water shapes. It is an unusual northern composition, and a meaningful one for people who have lived and worked in the Surgut area.
Below the settlement lies the broad floodplain of the Ob, a network of channels and oxbow lakes that fills much of the poster with curving water shapes.
The town stands on the raised bank its name refers to, and the edge where the built area meets the lower ground is clearly visible on the map.
Apartment blocks and houses are set out in a regular pattern, reflecting the planned growth of settlements in the oil region of western Siberia.
