The map

About this Bentota map poster

Bentota is shaped by water. The Bentota River widens as it nears the sea, and just before it reaches the Indian Ocean a long spit of sand separates the calm estuary from the open surf. From above, the town reads as a thin band of land between two very different kinds of water, with the coastal road and the railway tracing the shoreline.

The area has been one of Sri Lanka's best-known beach destinations since the early days of the island's tourism, and the quiet river is widely used for boating and water sports. Inland, the architect Geoffrey Bawa created his country estate, Lunuganga, on the shores of a nearby lake, and it is now a landmark of tropical modernist design.

A Bentota map poster captures the soft curves of the estuary against the long, nearly straight coastline. Few streets break up the land: small roads follow the river banks, and plots and palm groves fill the spaces between them. The result is a sparse, airy composition in which the water outlines take up most of the sheet.

01

The river mouth

The Bentota River bends and widens before meeting the ocean, and its estuary forms the most striking shape on the map, with sheltered water inside and surf outside.

02

Sand spit

A narrow strip of land runs between the estuary and the sea. On paper it appears as a slender peninsula, one of the most recognisable features of this stretch of coast.

03

Coastal rail line

The railway along the southwest coast follows the shore closely and draws a thin line parallel to the beach through the whole town.
